Do You Ever Just Get Sick of Your Own Shit?

Do you ever just get sick of your own shit?

Like there’s something you want to do or something you know you should be doing, but you just keep coming up with excuses not to do it?

And then one day you realize it’s been six months and you still haven’t done that thing you keep saying you want to do?

Last spring, I started going to this hot yoga studio after overthinking it for way too long. I went to several classes before I bought a 30 class card. I actually posted about it back then and how proud I was of myself for finally going.

Then, I skipped two classes in a row because I wasn’t feeling well. Two classes turned into two weeks of classes, which then turned into two months, and the next thing I knew it was November and I hadn’t been to a class since May.

Throughout that entire time, I kept talking about going back. I kept saying how much I wanted to go. I kept telling myself that I better use the 20-something classes left on my class card before it expired in April.

By the time November rolled around, I had built it up so much in my head that I was overthinking it all over again like I had been back in the beginning of 2022. And suddenly, going back to the hot yoga studio had become this impossible feat.

Toward the end of November, I finally got sick of my own shit.

“Lauren, you are going to be pissed if you let this class card expire without using the rest of the classes on it. That would be such a waste of money,” I told myself.

“You keep saying you want to go to this class or that class. Well if you want to go so badly, why don’t you just sign the hell up and go already?!”

I called myself on my own bullshit.

That week, I signed up for a pilates class and finally went back to the studio after making excuses for six freaking months.

Why am I telling you this?

Because today I used the last class on my class card and it doesn’t even expire for another two months.

What did I learn from this?

1. Sometimes, you have to learn the same lesson over and over again before you really learn it.

2. Celebrate even the smallest wins because they often take the most effort.

Let this be your reminder to get out of your head today and go do that thing you’ve been saying you want to do.

Do you ever just get sick of your own shit?

  1. You are awesome. I have bought a new house and it is under renovation. The end of the renovation is not yet clear. But, it will end and the house will be ready to move into! Which is awesome! I procrastinate every day because looking into all those closets or cupboards or drawers is hard. In each of those places live memories.
Memories of events or vacations or good times I have had over the 80+ years of my life, 60+ of those times or events include my dear, funny, crazy husband. He is now in a memory care unit because I could no longer safely keep him at home!
I am moving into a new home with my daughter, whom I love and look forward to enjoying for whatever time I have remaining to me. She is my child, my friend and exercise buddy. She encourages me each day to continue either the sorting and packing of this house so we can be ready to move. But it is hard and I can find lots of things to take up my time that do not involve digging into closets, drawers or boxes that bring those wonderful and many times very sad memories. Sometimes a box of photos will take an hour or more to go through. It is hard!
But reading your blog makes me laugh and say to myself…just get it done! And she just made her first cup of coffee this morning, the quiet reminder of the work we should do today in her look! Today I will sort and pack something! Your no nonsense advice is fresh in my mind! Get it done, you will feel so much better when you get all those memories sorted and cleaned up to think about when you unpack them all at the new house! Hop to it, stuff will not get done without the work or workout! Thanks for your kick in the ass!

    1. Hi Marijane! Packing and unpacking is my least favorite thing to do, and I’ve done it a lot! It can be very hard with all those memories, too. Start with just one drawer, one closet, one room. Fill one box. That will give you the momentum to keep going! Good luck with the new house!
